KDE vs Audio Devices (Plasma 5)

Wed Sep 30, 2015 3:52 am
If you want to use different audio devices (at different moments), you end up dealing with 3 different KDE components: phonon, kmix and the new audio control.
  • Phonon: needed to switch the device. It should be automatic, but somehow phonon does not detect when the hdmi is unplugged, so to switch back to speakers I have to change the preference list manually EVERYTIME (same goes when i plug the hdmi cable, because now the prefered is the analog output and i have to prefer hdmi, AGAIN).
  • kmix: after switching the device, you also want to control the volume of THAT device. But, again, you have to do it MANUALLY
  • Audio Control: this is a new feature of Plasma 5. It is just there in the system tray. You can hide it, but it is still occupying the system tray space. It's really annoying to have 2 different programs, that uses the same icon and are supposed to do the same, but they don't. You cannot switch the master channel within the audio control applet (you need kmix)

So, what's the deal? Everytime i plug or unplug the hdmi cable, i have to deal with 3 different components, and execute 2 different tasks, manually. Is that really the desired behaviour in KDE or just a problem i'm having?

I'm thinking on filling a bug report, but i wanted to be sure if it's just an issue i'm having or a problem within KDE since stone ages

hi wvidana, I'm having some problems which sound like they might be similar: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=130610 . Is this the same problem you're having?
