How do I plug in my speakers?

Thu Mar 24, 2016 6:19 pm
I have a new installation of openSUSE 42.1 with KDE 5.5.4. With that new installation, my line output from the motherboard became unrecognized (pavucontrol says it is not plugged in). Headphones work fine, but I don't always want to wear headphones. The pcspkr module is loaded so I think it ought to be talking to the line out.
Code: Select all
cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [SB             ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfe500000 irq 16
 1 [NVidia         ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfe080000 irq 37

Card 0 should be the motherboard with NVidia being HDMI graphics. I have tried several speakers, but none are seen. It could be a coincidental failure on the motherboard, but that would be quite a coincident.
Code: Select all
# cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0
Codec: Realtek ALC889
Address: 0
AFG Function Id: 0x1 (unsol 1)
Vendor Id: 0x10ec0889
Subsystem Id: 0x1458a132
Revision Id: 0x100004
And, yes, I can switch in and out the headphone/speaker plugs, but it leads to tangley wires and inconvenience when my internet phone rings.
