i posted this on the opensuse forum but little came of it.
please help me troubleshoot my audio cd woes. opensuse 11.0 x86 (no other OS installed on my system) kernel 2.6.25.18-0.2-pae kde 4.1.73 HAL 0.5.11-8.1 TSSTcorp CDW/DVD TS-H429A CD burner (/dev/sr0) Sony DVD RW DRU-800A DVD burner (/dev/sr1) (both connected via IDE cables). /etc/fstab: UUID=5d5673fe-5c8d-44fc-aa7a-f4b4ba053c4a swap swap defaults 0 0 UUID=262f35e8-a785-4fba-a5a8-bc4afe51bc63 / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1 UUID=4fff8b67-4b49-4972-bfa5-4afad71031cb /home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 UUID=c7dc82bd-7a99-45b8-8a30-b476a2a50487 /media/disk ext3 user,acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/disk/by-id/usb-PNY_USB_2.0_FD_6E54060019A7-0:0-part1 /media/PNYATTACHE vfat user,users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 /dev/disk/by-id/usb-ChipBank_SD.MM_Reader_110074973765-0:0-part1 /media/cr vfat user,users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0 debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0 usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 audio cds do show up as an unmounted cd in the lancelot menu plasmoid but aren't recognized by the new device notifier plasmoid. (they don't show up at all). i have the xine & gstreamer phonon backends installed but i doubt this has anything to do with the system seeing the audio cds cuz using either of these backends doesn't fix the problem. the automount daemon is running. audacious 1.5.1: sort of (see below) amarok 1.94: no dragon player 2.0: no k3b 1.0.5 (from packman repo): yes kde4-k3b 1.95svn: no kde4-kaffeine 0.9.0-pre-alpha: no mplayer/smplayer: yes elsewhere i was reading about a problem someone was having playing audio cds with mplayer. well, even though my problem isn't with mplayer, i decided to try the suggestion that was given: instead of launching a program with the direct path to disc drive device (/dev/sr0 in my case), it was suggested to try this instead: appname cdda:// well, this failed with my apps that still won't play audio cds.......except audacious! which is still my fav audio player. this works with audacious. it is a workaround, but audacious still won't display the "Play Audio CD" (like amarok) menu entry. (it still doesn't recognize audio cds when they're inserted even though i have it pointed to the correct path in the audio cd plugin preferences). it will only recognize & play audio cds if i launch it like this: audacious cdda:// suggestions? UPDATE: i just now saw this: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=444913 think it could be related?

Can you play it using Kaffeine, or access the Audio CD via the audiocd:/ KIO slave? I am running OpenSuSE 11.0, KDE 4.1.3 and it works fine. regarding audio cd's not showing up you may wish to read this thread here. Currently there are no notifications when a disc is inserted. You have to start an application manually.

i already listed kaffeine as a no. however i can access the audio cd with the kio slave in konqueror but not in dolphin. thanks for the URL, it contains info that is good to know. |

Does it effect it by changing which drive you put the Audio CD in? Are your KDE 4 sounds functional?
Also try opening the file ~/.xine/config in a text editor, and look for a line like this:

doesn't make a difference in either disc drive. yes my kde4 sounds are functional.
i have a ~/.xine directory but not a config file in it. (i would guess that is because i don't have the xine player installed). i upgraded hal to 0.5.12-11.1.un but that didn't make a difference, so the bug i referenced in my first post isn't related to this problem. |

Have you tried creating that file (~/.xine/config) and adding the required line? it was created automatically by Kaffeine (KDE 3 version) for me when I changed settings in its Xine engine, therefore it must be the global Xine settings file for your user.
Also, could you try out one of the applications that refuses to handle Audio CD's in the terminal and provide its output here?

well, it wouldn't do any good to try it with amarok2 (1.94) as the play audio cd menu entry isn't present so amarok obviously isn't detecting that a cd in inserted. however the latest version of kde4-k3b (4.1.3.svn881374-3.2) now detects the cd properly.
kde4-kaffeine & dragonplayer both generate this:
the relevant line is this: 1 "Cannot find input plugin for MRL [cdda:/]" i will try creating that xine config file and report back the results. UPDATE: creating the config file with that line in it didn't make a difference...

Interesting, I can confirm that Dragon Player does not even acknowledge the presence of audio CD. I also have KSCD installed, but that just claims to play, not making any sound, and spitting out one error twice in the console. KDE 4 Kaffeine does not work either.
You could verify that it is not an Xine problem by installing the KDE 3 version of Kaffeine, which does work for me. However I am currently picking that Audio CD support is in a broken mess, which is excusable for Kaffeine, and Amarok because they are in beta, but not for KSCD. Dragon Player does not even claim support in the GUI, or handbook and so if it is a work in progress feature that is hidden, then it is allowed to be broken. [UPDATE: It is not broken, see my post later on]

Dragon Player works just fine for me here with Audio CDs. KsCD didn't work till i changed the audio driver to digital and phonon. I don't have kaffeine beta installed, so can't say much about that.

dragon player does have the option 'Play Disc' but it doesn't work.
i don't have kscd installed. i installed kaffeine 0.8.7-2.1. this is a possible problem it showed when i started it: DVD Drive... Can't check DMA mode. Permission denied or no such device: "/dev/dvd". when clicking the play cd icon after configuring it this pops up: 'No audio CD found.' here is the command line output: QSettings: failed to open file '/usr/lib/qt3//etc/settings/qt_plugins_3.3rc' kbuildsycoca running... QSettings: failed to open file '/usr/lib/qt3//etc/settings/qt_plugins_3.3rc' QSettings: failed to open file '/usr/lib/qt3//etc/settings/qt_plugins_3.3rc' ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 12367, errno = 11

Thanks for the tip Neverendingo! KSCD And Dragon Player now work for me, after I switched back to the Xine backend. It seems that the GStreamer backend has no support for Audio CD playback. It also allowed the Kaffeine KDE 4 Beta to attempt to play the Audio CD but it apparently could not find a valid output device.
Echoes, Do you have the file /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.22/xineplug_inp_cdda.so on your system? If you have other files in that directory, but not that one, I would recommend updating to the latest Packman libxine1 as they may have forgot to compile CD Audio support in when you installed the package.

Another user here has the same problem as you, also running OpenSuSE 11.0.
He had /dev/cdrom3 instead of /dev/cdrom. Check to see if you have any of these /dev/cdrom devices. If you do then simply use KDE 3 Kaffeine to set audio_cd.device and dvd.device to the appropriate drive ( I would recommend using /dev/sr1 in your case so you can burn a DVD at the same time as listening to a CD )

i know for a fact that this is not my problem. all those cdrom/dvdrom "devices" actually aren't devices at all, they are symlinks. my actual devices are /dev/sr0 & /dev/sr1 and they are configured correctly in each application. however, what about permissions? what permissions should those devices have?

Permissions shouldn't be a problem, given that MPlayer has no problem, but here is the output of: ls /dev -la | grep sr
Could you provide the same listing from your computer as well please?
