I recently had the same problem. In my case, I could fix it in system settings > multimedia > audio volume > Advanced tab
There I changed the profile from "analog stereo output" to "digital stereo (HDMI)". Don't forget to click apply It still feels like a hack, but so far it is the only way I found to get audio working with HDMI.
