How to capture KDE desktop audio output stream?

I have a KDE desktop where I run various programs that generate audio output.
I want to capture the entire audio stream and make it a "pulsesrc" for gst-launch-1.0(1), or the equivalent interface in SoX rec(1). So it can be streamed across the LAN to another machine running SoX or gstreamer.
I've tried the obvious,
Code: Select all
 rec -c 2 -t wav
but the .wav file or stream it creates contains only white noise.
I have searched every forum I can find. It seems this is an unusual use case, because I am not finding anything. I'm stuck trying to identify a "memory interface" (naming syntax, unknown, possibly involving an Alsa loopback device) that can be used as an input to rec(1), or some way to create a pulsesrc that captures desktop audio..

Does this question belong under Kmix? It wasn't one of the silos in Guided Posting, or I would have asked there.
