I have a mac mini 2GHz set up, and I have alsa working. alsamixer works great, can control all of the volume controls.

However, kmix won't toggle the IEC958 control to turn the optical output on. I'm somewhat confused as it works fine in alsamixer. I was under the impression that kmix used alsa's configuration.

Does anyone have any idea why it's not working? kde 3.5.9, kernel 2.6.26-4.

Try renaming the kmix config files and restart kmix:
[code]cd ~/.kde/share/config/ && mv kmixctrlrc kmixctrlrc_old && mv kmixrc kmixrc_old[/code]

I just tried that and it made no difference. I find it weird that the volume sliders work and the toggles don't.
