i use a creative webcam and it works great in "cheese" or in "ekiga" but not in "kopete" or "webKam" there is no error but a black picture an the "standard" field is empty... it also doesn't work in "qutecom" and "skype" either.. but there is a picture of dancing green stripes..

so its somehow obvious that those programs use three different types of accessing my webcam.. and only the way of the gnome seems to work (info: it worked for kopete in kde3.5)

(it is a creativ live webcam that uses the gspca_zc3xx driver)

Have you tried to install and use the v4l1 compability libraries, like described for SuSE here?

There are also instructions for other distributions, just search for "LD_PRELOAD v4l1compat ".

i messed around a lot with my installation and then ekiga stopped working too.. i found a bugreport that suggests exactly the same solution like the one in your post..
Code: Select all
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so ekiga

did the trick.. i just tried it for "webKam" and it also works there.. thank you!
