I don't know if this is a bug in KDE or if it's the graphics drivers that are to blame, but often when I open a window, menu, or image, before the object appears as normal, there is a severely distorted, discolored, grainy rendering of it that flashes. Also, when opening windows, sometimes I'll see the grey/white checkered pattern that represents the transparent "alpha" color. This pattern often appears as the background to the logout dialogue box, or other times flashes back and forth between the desktop and alpha pattern. And on the topic of the logout box, it is often stretched or misshapen itself. This happened in KDE 4.1, and has continued into 4.2. This does NOT happen in Gnome or Xfce.

GFX: ATI Radeon x800 XL
Driver: 8.552-0ubuntu0.1

I am also having this same problem, and I also have an ATI video card... Does anyone have a fix?

Thanks! That was very informative. Maybe I should just be using Jaunty anyway! :P
