i recently reinstalled os. after the reinstall in kde 3 players (arts based) the sound plays a bit faster than normal and then stops for a bit and waits to the right time to start again
for example if i'd try to play a constant 4 KHZ sound i'd hear 4.2 KHZ for 4 sec then silence for 0.2 sec and so on (time is estimated) in kaffeine the video is normal and sound has this effect arts seems to take 8 % cpu or so and nothing looks wrong in sysguard in other players sound just freezes a lot but between the freezes plays with normal speed the computer never had such issues before the reinstall (with the exact same versions of kde / arts / players etc nor with kde 4.1 which used to be installed it. even under high load like compiling stuff) dell optiplex 150 intel ich2 82815 kde 3.5.10 Linux viridian 2.6.28-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Feb 22 11:03:50 UTC 2009 i686 Pentium III (Coppermine) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |

I believe aRtS can resample audio, you may wish to check its configuration in KDE Control Center.
Alternately, you may wish to disable aRtS, which will cause KDE applications to play audio directly.

Maybe your ALSA configuration is damaged. Does this also affect mpg123?
How to test using mpg123:
