Hello there,
I am using kde 4.2 with ubuntu 8.10 on my T61p lenovo thinkpad (with a Plantronics USB headset). The thinkpad, my external keyboard and the headset come with buttons to increase/decrease sound volume. Right from the beginning, they worked fine ... but now they dont have any effect on sound volume any more: When pressing the buttons, I get the usual "volume bar" on my screen; and I can increase/decrease the values ... but just on the screen. The sound volume itself stays fixed. The only way to change the volume is to open the kmixer application and to toggle the PCM volume there. Or using the volume controls with the different programs I am using (like amorak). I tried various other tools like alsaconfig ... but I couldnt find a hook to figure out what is going on. Any idea where to look? |

Sounds like the Master channel has been changed.
Right click KMix icon > Select Master Channel My system has "Master" selected.

Mine had "PCM" ... changing back to master resolved the problem to a certain degree. The buttons work again to change the volume, but: it seems that the different applications can still override: I used kmixer and set the volume for all applications to 0 - but when listening to music with Amorak i can still hear something. Only by using the Amorak software volume bar I can get my headset to not emit any sound at all. But with that setting, i wont hear anything even when increasing the headset volume (using the special keys). So i ended up to set the amorak volume to 10% ... then i can still use the buttons to adjust the headset volume from "almost nothing to hear to loud enough". Thx! |

Sounds like the incorrect channel has been selected. The true master channel cannot be overridden by any application. It may be named differently, and is usually the first channel ( starting from the left ) in KMix's main window.
If this issue is resolved, please mark it as solved using the "It's Solved" button. Thanks in advance.
