Upgrade to Jaunty and KDE 4.2.2 seems to have fixed this.

When I startup my computer, I have no sound.

I have found that running 'sudo alsa force-reload' will bring sound back, but it also kills kwin. So then I do a ctl-shift-escape to restart X.

How can I debug this, so I don't have to run these commands every time?

(I'm on KDE 4.2.1)

Have you tried running alsaconf followed by 'alsactl store'?

I just tried that

Actually just
Code: Select all
sudo alsactl store

But I still have no sound after a restart. I assume alsa is crashing on startup, but am not sure how I would fix that.

Which distribution are you using, and which version? Please ensure your system is fully updated, your distribution may have published fixes for the issue.

Does KMix startup and provide control over the various sliders ( Master, PCM, etc )?

Please make sure you are a member of the "Audio" group.

? My system suddenly stopped playing sound for me one day with a "Access Denied" message. Adding myself to the "Audio" group corrected the problem.

So, I attempted to add myself the the 'audio' group with this command:

Code: Select all
$ sudo usermod -G audio axiom

I don't think it was the right one, because now not only does sound not work, but I am unable to sudo

Code: Select all
axiom@axiom:~$ sudo alsa force-reload
[sudo] password for axiom:
Sorry, user axiom is not allowed to execute '/sbin/alsa force-reload' as root on axiom.

I can't think of a way to fix this without sudo'ing, and of course I can't log in as root, since this is Kubuntu.

Ideas?

I fixed the sudo problem with this advice:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/sudo

But I still have the same problem with sound.
