Hi everyone.
With KDE 4.2.1 (and less), i always have sound on my laptop (Intel 828201 CA-ICH3 with ALC200,200P) but since i make an upgrade to KDE4.2.2, no more sound. When trying to test (SystemSettings/Multimedia), i have a Phonon pop-up saying that the Intel 828201 CA-ICH3 is not working. Can someone help me, please ? Thank's for answering ! Guillaume |

Do non Phonon applications work? And is a new user affected?
If the answer to both is yes, please ensure that all KDE related packages are updated, and the correct backend has been selected in System Settings > Multimedia. If the answer to the first question is no, then your systems configuration has been changed. Usually there is an 'audio' group that you will need to be a member of for sound to work.

Thank's for taking time to answer. As you thought, the answer to your first question is no... The soundcardinfo.sh script on Phonon's web site tells this :
lsmod | grep snd says :
If it can help... Guillaume |

If you open Konsole, then type in 'alsamixer', you should see a variety of vertical bars ( with names such as 'Master', 'PCM', etc ) and you should be able to adjust them with the arrow keys on your keyboard.
If you recieve an "access denied" message, could you please post the output of these two commands?

I am suspecting a permissions problem... could you please provide the output of these two commands?
can you also try downloading a WAV file and playing it through "aplay" or an MP3 through "mpg123" and see if that works? ( Please post any error messages )

For the .wav with aplay :
For the .mp3 with mpg123 :

It is related to Pulseaudio locking the audio device. If you use it, you need to ensure that it is functional, otherwise I would recommend uninstalling it. As a quick check, try running "killall pulseaudio" then trying to play sound using aplay / mpg123.

No processus kill when running killall pulseaudio ! |

These two commands will tell you the processes which are using the Audio devices:
Please post their output here. This is now likely to be related to an ALSA DMix issue.

If you kill knotify4, then you should be able to play sounds again.

Bingo  Is it a bug of KNotify4 ? |

It is supposed to release the audio device quickly, this time it appears it didn't. Please check the versions of everything related to Phonon ( backends, etc. ) are fully updated, since I have never experienced it ( on trunk anyway ) You may also want to check that DMix is correctly configured.

On my openSuSE 11.1 install I actually had to remove PulseAudio completely, it was definitely conflicting with sound.
