I like the one in Compiz. But even Metacity's OSD is better than no OSD at all
Maybe, there is a Plasmoid, or built-in function in KWin/KMixer? Any tips are greatly appreciated..

There is no OSD support at all in KMix sadly unfortunately because KHotkeys doesn't work properly, i can't use a small program i found somewhere designed to recieve a DBus call that would make it perform a DBus call to KMix and would display a OSD if the DBus call to KMix succeeded. However that was more a hack rather than a fix, and is a feature KMix really needs. Too bad the soft feature freeze is now in effect.

So, there isn't such option in KMix, and it can't be configured via an external app, cause KHotKeys does not work properly.. right? Btw, I personally think, that this Volume OSD should be KWin's feature (not KMix's one), with different appearance for Desktops Effects: On / Off modes. And I don't mind if it will send commands to KMix via DBus - since it was specifically designed for interprocess communication. Just interesting: can a Plasmoid be written, to have appropriate features. I'm pretty sure DBus to KMix will be possible in it; but I'm not sure, if it's possible to appear Plasmoid over ALL windows, for a little amount of time, just when a certain shortcut is entered...[hr] Btw, I've found the following info @ http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160892#c26
What was that "small program you found somewhere", bcooksley? Maybe, we should give it another try with khotkeys from KDE3?

Instructions for usage are included, however it is the source ( uses qmake ) so i hope you have a developer install. if not i will put the executable up somewhere.
