Just got through updating my system through Synaptic and now have no sound -- no system sound, nothing through aTunes or through CDs. i have seen this popup as well

Image

Have tried getting help on the PCLinuxOS forums but no one seems to know how to fix this. Have also noticed on these forums that Pulseaudio should not be used in certain cases/distros. i wonder if this is the case for ours as well.

Have tried various things to get this to work and am currently uninstalling Pulseaudio. i've uninstalled all of the packages that i can without uninstalling what appears to be the majority of my OS (some 960 Mb) so i think i've pretty much reached the end of the line.

Any ideas would be helpful and have a great morning! :)

When you get that message are you doing anything in particular, such as using a web browser on a Flash powered site, or something such as that?

This command will reveal who is using the audio devices:
Code: Select all
lsof /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*

Thanks for replying, bcooksley. i've only gotten that popup once in the last week.

The output from the command you suggested above results in...

Code: Select all
 lsof /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*
COMMAND     PID       USER   FD   TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
keytouchd  7407 frazelle09    4u   CHR  116,0      3378 /dev/snd/controlC0
knotify4  23810 frazelle09   12u   CHR  116,0      3378 /dev/snd/controlC0
kmix      23852 frazelle09   10u   CHR  116,0      3378 /dev/snd/controlC0
kmix      23852 frazelle09   12u   CHR 116,32      5974 /dev/snd/controlC1
mplayer   25254 frazelle09  mem    CHR 116,16      3327 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
mplayer   25254 frazelle09    5u   CHR 116,16      3327 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p

Have a great afternoon! :)

Note that uninstalling Pulseaudio is the correct step for PCLinuxOS which is an Ubuntu based distribution.
Noting under which conditions you have issues with sound not working will be key to finding out why.
