Remap volume keys

Mon Jan 11, 2010 6:13 pm
Hello,

I tried to remap the keys (exactly: use additional keys) for volume and playback control using xmodmap:

keycode 191 = XF86AudioMute
keycode 192 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
keycode 193 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
keycode 194 = XF86AudioPrev
keycode 195 = XF86AudioPlay
keycode 196 = XF86AudioNext

According to xev it seems to work

Code: Select all
KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4600001,
    root 0xad, subw 0x0, time 7708138, (112,100), root:(116,919),
    state 0x0, keycode 123 (keysym 0x1008ff13, XF86AudioRaiseVolume), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4600001,
    root 0xad, subw 0x0, time 7730661, (112,100), root:(116,919),
    state 0x0, keycode 193 (keysym 0x1008ff13, XF86AudioRaiseVolume), same_screen YES,
    XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 123
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4600001,
    root 0xad, subw 0x0, time 7730741, (112,100), root:(116,919),
    state 0x0, keycode 193 (keysym 0x1008ff13, XF86AudioRaiseVolume), same_screen YES,
    XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 123
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

The first one is the original working keys, the second one is the one I try to use additionally.
But there is no reaction from KDE. Neither for the volume keys nor for playback control (which I setup using khotkeys). I can reset the keys in khotkeys but still nothing works.

Thanks,

Florian

Which distribution and KDE version are you using?

Open KMix > Settings > Configure Shortcuts.

Find "Volume Up", "Volume Down" and "Mute Volume" and change their Global shortcut as needed, allowing it to take the shortcut from any other application which also uses those keys.

KDE Sysadmin
