legacy sound for old loki games etc

Mon May 10, 2010 9:11 am
Hi guys, does anyone have any wisdom on how to get sound working for my old loki etc games?

I've just moved from KDE 3.5 to 4.4.3 (debian unstable). I have KDE sound (ie the login & logout sounds etc), but I can't get sound working for my old loki games such Civilisation CTP etc.

CivCTP used to work under KDE using the artsdsp wrapper. But that doesn't work anymore.

Similar problem with Enemy Territory - before upgrading to 4.4.3 sound worked if I first executed:

Code: Select all
echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
echo "et.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

Any ideas on how I can get these legacy games talking?

It is possible that your system is using Pulseaudio or similar infrastructure which may not emulate OSS sufficiently for these Loki games to function. Please also ensure that DMix is appropriately configured to be functional.

Thanks, I'm not using Pulseaudio (or at least the pulseaudio package isn't installed). I'll experiment with DMix.

I've had some success with Enemy Territory - the solution (use SDL) at href="http://nullkey.ath.cx/~stuff/et-sdl-sound works

I'll checkout DMix etc and see if it helps with the oss loki games.
