Whenever I log into KDE kmix is muted. Unmuting it has no effect. The only way to get sound is to run alsaconfig :(

Here some details:

Anybody else out there who knows what may be going on?

Are you using pulseaudio?

To be honest, I don't know. System says it is installed, so my guess would be: yes :)

I've never had to do anything with sound as it always worked out of the box. I've had xine and VLC as a back-end to phonon but the problem persists in both cases. And Jack appears to be there, also...

Try opening pavucontrol, select Output Devices, and make sure that isn't muted.

What I can't figure out is why pulseaudio always mutes on startup.

On my system this doesn't occur... have you checked your KMix settings?
