Whenever I log into KDE kmix is muted. Unmuting it has no effect. The only way to get sound is to run alsaconfig
Here some details:
Anybody else out there who knows what may be going on?

Are you using pulseaudio?

To be honest, I don't know. System says it is installed, so my guess would be: yes
I've never had to do anything with sound as it always worked out of the box. I've had xine and VLC as a back-end to phonon but the problem persists in both cases. And Jack appears to be there, also...

Try opening pavucontrol, select Output Devices, and make sure that isn't muted.

On my system this doesn't occur... have you checked your KMix settings?
