When I need to record from a webcam, I usually use ffmpeg, with the following command. You may also wish to look into Kamoso.
ffmpeg -f oss -ac 2 -ar 48000 -i /dev/dsp1 -acodec pcm_s16le -f video4linux2 -s 720x480 -r 30000/1001 -i /dev/video0 -sameq -aspect 4:3 -f avi -vcodec mjpeg -r 30000/1001 -y /path/to/output.avi
