My system is archlinux and up to date. I use kde4. SMplayer(and mplayer) play video with a bad broken audio.
I don't install the gstreamer-plugins, it seems too much addtional packages. anyway, I can playback. I've tried phonon-xine(default is phonon-gstreamer) and pulseaudio, broken. If I tried mplayer in twm(not in kde), fine. smplayer in twm, broken. in kde, when playing mp3 with mplayer, if I active a qt window(such as about kDE), the sound get worse immediately. If I minimize the smplayer window, the audio will be better than it actived. the problem caused by qt or kde? solved: I use the following to start kde in .xinitrc that caused the problem:
change to:
the sound crackling disapear, I don't know why, but it works

I seriously doubt that activating any Qt/KDE window (especially those which have no knowledge of the audio system) could in any way directly affect the audio stack.
In terms of audio, how does it get "worse"? If it stutters, you need to investigate your X driver configuration, as the placement of Qt windows (which may use ARGB visuals) above the video area of mplayer may cause additional load which your CPU/GPU cannot handle. This is also hinted at by the improved playback when it is minimized (if mplayer does anything like VLC does and cease rendering of video when minimized). In terms of lowering load on your GPU, you may wish to try disabling Desktop Effects.

1. I doubt it too. So I am confused
2. in terms of "worse", I mean it like speaking with full of water in mouth. 3. I have no xorg.conf, xorg auto detect. and cpu/gpu load is normal. no other window on top of mplayer(smplayer) window. 4. I've tried disable desktop effects, problem is still there. thx |

phonon-vlc now is installed, I got good sounds with:
vlc(fullscreen)+any backends(vlc, gstreamer)=good sounds any other combinations, still bad sounds: vlc(normal window) or smplayer(both window and fullsreen)+any backends=bad sounds |
