I have a Lenovo l512 laptop with Intel HD audio. I'd really like to be able to mute the speakers so that when I'm wearing headphones other people won't be bothered by the noise my computer is making. I'd expect the speakers to be automatically muted when the headphones are connected but I gotta assume that this is a module problem, so I can live with it. My beef with KDE though is that I can't manipulate the audio hardware in any way at all. Gnome allows me to do what I want, how can I get these features in KDE? It really is a pain in the **** to log out of KDE, log into Gnome, change the settings, log back out, log back into KDE and then run my audio programs.

what Gnome app do you run that manipulates the settings correctly? Why not just call that program from with KDE and see if it works bypassing the convoluted process you currently use.

The program is gnome-volume-control, and although it has a completely different interface when run in KDE, it seems I can still use it for my purposes.
