Hello,
I recently received updates on my system which is Sabayon/Gentoo 2.6.37. My whole system and KDE is always up to date. For the past 2 months I've been experiencing total system freezes like never before. Sabayon is an extremely stable and reliable distro I've been using since 2006, so I doubt this is a distro related issue. After a lot of checking where the problem could be I figured it must me Audacious when streaming a radio station. What happens is I can listen to music and do browsing and other minor things, but then suddenly the radio stream starts choking and I can barely move my mouse around. The system fails to respond to anything. I can't even start a console to run top or anything to find out which part of the system is causing the system to go dead. I can't even navigate to the Start menu to make a restart. I can only press the power button. This can happen after 2-3 hours of working. I now close Audaciuous whenever I am not using it, but it's a pity, because 1-2 months ago everything was fine and I did not have to shut Audacious in order to start doing other things. I could listen to a radio stream all night and nothing like a total freeze would happen. Has anyone experienced something similar or maybe there is a know problem? It's hard for me to know if this is just Audacious or a combination of the program streaming. It seems like playing Mp3 files from the hard drive isn't causing any problems so far. This is what top shows when everything is working:
Does X and Kwin have to consume so much CPU? I have a Quad core x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 810 processor with tons of memory. Thanks in advance for helping, Richard |

That level of CPU usage is very unusual. Have you tried disabling Desktop Effects? Does logging in and out have any effect? Have you recently installed any Plasma applets?
