VLC no sound

can anybody help me?I got VLC installed on Kubuntu 11.10,but without sound.With Dragon-Player videos work fine.I chose VLC because it does have an equalizer,Help :-*

in VLC preferences -> audio -> output module -> try pulseaudio then try alsa
also check -> device is it the same as set in systemsettings?

Here is how it worked for me on the latest VLC,

in VLC, Tools-> preferences -> audio one the left hand side -> output module -> Pick Win32 WaveOUt Extension Output and check mark the "Use S/PDIF when available under that, and it worked for me. My OS is Win 7 32bit. Hope this helped.
