1st lets see if the system sees a sound card
Code: Select all
aplay -L

2nd lets see if the sound module are loaded, post back the results
Code: Select all
lsmod | grep snd

if you have an Intel chipset and snd_hda_intel is not listed run
Code: Select all
sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel

I can only tell you that it appears that Kubuntu is not seeing your sound chip and maybe you should post on their forum

Is this your first experience with Linux? Maybe trying a different distribution would help, though a derivative of Ubuntu may have the same problem - if you were to try a different one I'd run from the live cd and see if it plays music before installing.
