My system has an Asus Sabertooth Mobo with AMD 990FX chipset and AMD FX-8120 CPU. Software is Kubuntu 11.10, Kernel 3.0.0-15-generic, KDE 4.7.4, ALSA Version 1.0.25, Phonon Version 4.7.4 and PulseAudio version 1.0.

I made the mistake of answering yes to the Phonon Sound and Video Configuration question "Do you want KDE to permanently forget about (some) devices". Now I have no sound from any of the built-in motherboard jacks.

There's a bunch of command outputs below. Apparently I deleted the ATI Azalia(/Intel HDA/Realtek ALC892) sound device(s) in Phonon, although they do appear in lspci, /proc/asound and ALSA (?), see below. Thus my question is how to restore my sound and/or the deleted sound devices in Phonon.

I've seen many posts with the same problem, and I've tried a number of suggestions, no joy so far. (It would be nice if Phonon had an option to restore the deleted devices).

look at ~/.kde/share/config/phonondevicesrc renaming it should force it to regenerate the defaults - as I've not actually done this I strongly suggest you rename and do not delete

It may also be handy to delete/remove the hardware database file at /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/libphonon/hardwaredatabase as well.

When I deleted ~/.kde/share/config/phonondevicesrc and rebooted, nothing changed. Possibly this is because pulseaudio is persistent (?), so I edited /etc/pulse/client.conf to make it not be persistent, . ie autospawn = no. Then if I reboot pulseaudio does not start automatically and I see all devices in System Settings -> Multimedia -> Phonon .... although I get the
message again asking me if I want to remove the needed sound devices (I answer no), and when I try to use/test those devices I get a popup saying it/they are not working. If I then start pulseaudio manually, the needed sound devices disappear from System Settings -> Multimedia -> Phonon.

Deleting the hardware database file at /var/tmp/kdecache $USER/libphonon/hardwaredatabase does not change the behavior above.

By now I've tried A LOT of suggestions I've found in google searches, and obviously I could have screwed things up royally. Can I apt-get remove and reinstall phonon, pulseaudio, alsa, their dependencies (and whatever else needs to be removed???), reinstall and will that solve the problem?

the problem, if other users work, is something in your config and reinstalling the packages I wouldn't think would matter

what I would do is find and rename all phonon, pulseaudio and alsa files in my home folder

I did this, and *no* the sound does not work for the new user either, in fact it "not works" the same as my normal user (me). If pulseaudio is not started, I see all devices in System Settings -> Multimedia -> Phonon .... although I get the message again asking me if I want to remove the (needed/ATI) sound devices (I answer no), and when I try to use/test those devices I get a popup saying "Sound ATI SB HDA not working" (or something like that). The motherboard has ATI sound, and that's the jack my speakers are connected to.

If I then start pulseaudio manually, the needed sound devices disappear from System Settings -> Multimedia -> Phonon.

I note that one of the devices I *did not* previously delete in phonon was a Logitec USB headphone. That still/always appears in Phonon, even when pulseaudio is running, and it I test that device in Phonon I *do* get sound.

Given that the USB headset works - regardless of Pulseaudio being used or not I would speculate that this is possibly a permission issue. Are you in the necessary audio groups?

You can check devices such as /dev/dsp to check your permissions.

Oops. /dev/dsp is for when you have OSS compatibility enabled, which it seems distributions are starting to drop.

/dev/snd/pcm* are the crucial devices. At least on my system, only members of the "audio" group and root can access them.

I tried that - no joy, but I don't know all the dependencies. Could someone give me the correct commands to do this?

reinstalling packages: you need to use the "--reinstall" option such as apt-get install phonon* --reinstall
