I use KUbuntu 14.04 and kde because (if its working) its nice desktop appearence. I like the mathematical features of KRunner

HOWEVER, Cantor with R is a pain in the a**, can't even send certain lines from the script editor to the worksheet without copy/paste. The constant display of matrices after initialisation is nonsens, especially when your matrices of dimension 1000+x. Moreover, no autocompletion for R functions and so on and so forth. So far a nice trial, but simply not competitive with emacs.

KDevelop has no Fortran plugin, thus, a plugin for the language heavily used in mathematics and mathematical applying science. Again, not competitive with emacs.

Kate can be used for latex, but as with all K-editors, the line spacing cannot be adjusted which makes it a pain for the eyes to read long text blocks. Again, not competitive with emacs.

Thus, there is still a long way to go for all built in K-editors to get to the level of emacs or eclipse.

Have a look at RKward for an R IDE

I know rkward, the same problem with line spacing as all k-editors

Moreover, I don't wanna run a zillion editors for a zillion apps. Thats why, although the start off might be pain, I always recommend to anyone EMACS. There is, probably beside vi or eclipse, nothing competitive in the market yet. K-editors altogether have to make a big leap forward to get only close to those.

Also, I find calling an application "not competitive with X" because it doesn't have $tiny_feature you need a bit short-sighted, but maybe that's just me. Overall, kate is easily a better editor than the thingie eclipse ships with.
If you consider a language "supported" if there's something like a KDevelop language plugin for it, then emacs doesn't "support" any language at all. The amount of "support" which comes with most editors (e.g. indentation, code completion of builtins, and syntax highlighting) exists in KDevelop or kate for probably any language you've heard of.

Something I really like is ipython-notebook. A project idea I've had for a while would be to have something like that, but with kdevelop's python support as the input method. That is probably quite similar to what cantor wants to do though ...
Cantor would be a nice alternative to ipython-notebook, but unfortunately its editor is even more basic than what ipython-notebook has (which does introspection-based completion and somewhat automatic indentation at least). If that could be improved, I'm sure there would be quite some interest in the scientific community.
I wished we'd manage to create a python notebook application with kdevelop's editor and interactive graphical output -- that'd be awesome. But I'm not sure if that is feasible.
