Do you use LabPlot or RKWard?

Thu Jun 23, 2011 12:36 pm
These applications are way outside my skills and abilities, so I desperately need someone to help me get a page about each written in UserBase. No mediawiki skill is needed - I can happily take plain text and add the markup myself. Screenshots would be appreciated. I'll even promise a beer at Desktop Summit, if you help ;D

Never used rkward, but I'm pretty sure you will not find many LabPlot users: last "stable" (it is quite crash prone and almost unusable) version is still for kde3 while the kde4 version is in a pre pre pre pre... pre alpha state.
The good old Grace is still widely used on the scientific community, with some using qtiplot or its fork, SciDAVis.
(by the way, SciDAVis project is collaborating with LabPlot... but it is a long time since last release from any of these projects... :'( )

It sounds as though LabPlot should be removed from the UserBase page. Am I right in thinking that Grace and SciDAVis are not KDE applications? If there is no direct KDE application, should we include a section for applications like this? It seems to me that there's no point in being over-precious about this sort of thing if it leaves newcomers without necessary tools, so that they don't stay. What's you opinion?

Grace is a M*tif app, while qtiplot and SciDAVis are pure Qt apps.
I would love to see LabPlot on good shape, it is a promising app full of features that you can only find on commercial apps... but it is also a big project and they have not enough developers.

Agree. At least a "third party apps" section will be useful if no KDE app exists for the work.

Happily we now have the start of a page for http://userbase.kde.org/RKWard There's still much to be added, so if you use it and can help, please do.

You need to register a user name, after which you will see the edit button on each page - looks like a pencil in a circle. Click that, and type away. If you want to add images, there is an upload link in the sidebar.

See you on UserBase :)

Another app which could fall into this category (though it is different) is kst (kst.kde.org). And so maybe it should have a userbase page as well.

However, there is one issue: kst 2.x is not actually a KDE app, but rather qt4 only for easier tri-platform portability (kst1.x was kde3). The proposed changes for KDE5 make me think that KDE5 will improve on this issues, but in the meantime... boh?

What do you think? Should we create a kst userbase page?

It certainly does look interesting. However, UserBase is a KDE wiki, and as such is dedicated to applications that are developed within the KDE framework. Sadly, the decision to go purely Qt rules it out.

Woah . . . not so fast there missy on ditching LabPlot !

A seamless yum install of LabPlot from the Fedora repository . . . in Fedora 15 KDE for now
Code: Select all
# yum install LabPlot
...
installing package LabPlot-1.6.0.2-8.fc12.i686.rpm
...

and I am about to try in either F17 KDE or the latest Fedora 18 (spherical cow) KDE with its' improved integration with KDE.

Since Fedora 18 features KDE 4.9.5 with Linux kernel 3.6.10 (which gets updated to 3.7.2 on first update)
this could get very fun . . . very fast !

I'll keep ya' posted in the good ol' U.K. - as well as Hans in Sverige btw -
. . . maybe thinking outside the box - thinking outside Debian, n'est-ce pas ?

And well, a free pint of suds could be on the line here (someday) annew ? Where do I sign up ?

LabPlot 2.0 is in beta since a couple of weeks, so it seems that finally we'll have a KDE4 version!
