I created many files with KWord (saved as .kwd) when using DesktopBSD 1.6.
The KWord files are saved on DVDs as well as on online file storage sites. I am now using PC-BSD 9.2 and need to open those KWord files. I have tried to open them using LibreOffice but it will not recognize them, nor will AbiWord. How can I open them without doing a reinstall of DesktopBSD in order to have the KOffice suite available? |

Abiword has an import/export filter plugin you could try
also you could try finding an older livecd that includes Koffice (save having to do an install) and use that to convert your documents, iirc there a batch converter |

Thank you for your help. Under the AbiWord Plugin Manager I did find the KWord 1.x Importer/Exporter plugin, but when trying to use it to open a KWord document the only result was a pop-up box saying: "Could not activate/load plugin." Repeating the attempt and trying with another document only gave the same response. Perhaps I'll be able to find a live CD containing KOffice. |

No, I have not yet found a solution in this matter.
The AbiWord plugin that seemed like a good possibility would not activate. Thanks for your concern. Unless a better method is available, I will probably partition my hard drive and install DesktopBSD to have KOffice usable and then convert the KWord files. |

Hey all! I registered just to post this in case it helps others. Years ago I used KWord for quite a few documents and have tried many times to find a way to open them (2016). Tried a lot of old distros that were KDE but couldn't get Kword/KOffice up and running (dependencies) and seriously was going to give up. Found a Slax 5.0.6 iso that comes with KWord ready to go. My Desktop is a 2010? AMD 1090T. The live Slax booted to a text prompt to enter root- instructions are right there with the password. That takes you to another prompt where thank God 'startx' worked and I was in! Had copied all my kword documents into a file and put that on the slax usb. Once booted in I started KWord and searched the usb. No easy way to batch them all, but I did open them all and saved them in abiword format. Booted back into my system and LibreOffice opened them! So if you can boot Slax 5.0.6 you might save some of those oldie documents. Best of luck!
