Options for syncing calendar, to-do and contacts accross multiple computers kde 4.2
Tue May 26, 2009 11:54 am
Hello,
What options are currently available for syncing my calendar, contact list and to-do list across multiple computers in Kde 4.2 onwards. I know Kontact supports Kolab Servers, but does it specifically need a Kolab server to work? There is a thunderbird extension that allows for Kolab syncing without a Kolab server, does the Kolab feature in kontact work there same way? If it it does, can anyone provide a guide or a link to a guide as I am not having much luck with finding information? What other options are available, I know there is no fnambol options in Kontact so I am at a loss. Thanks in advance Tuxedup. |

The only way currently is to synchronize the data files, e.g. the standard addressbook file $HOME/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf
There had been work on a sync solution based on OpenSync, but unfortunately that project didn't manage to release a stable version in the time frame of 4.2 or even 4.3 One of KDE's Google Summer of Code students this year is working on an alternative SyncML based solution. However that won't be available before 4.4 Cheers, _

I have found that my best option a the moment is to use webdav folders. I am using the webdav storage space provided by my email provider and have Kmail store the address book on the webdav folder and the same process for KOrganiser with calenders.
It seems to function ok, although I cannot access the address book when off-line. It is not as elegant a solution as I would like, but it allows me to sync across multiple computers and will do until funamol syncml support is integrated into Kontact. |

Hi, just wondering if you can give a pointer to the GSoC project, and if you know if it works with KDE 4.3.
I've got a few thunderbird/icedove installations across a few computers and I synchronize contacts between them with synckolab to an IMAP folder. I'd like to move to using KMail (on the computers where I have access to installing it), but I want to keep my address book in sync. |

You can find the students blog here: http://saschpe.wordpress.com/
You may also wish to ask in the #kontact channel in IRC for more information about compatibility with KDE 4.3.

You can use Kontact with Kolab: http://www.kolab.org/about-kolab-clients.html But as you say this is only relevant if you are running a Kolab server which is a whole different ball game.

You don't need a Kolab server for storing contacts, calendar and to-do on a mail server - you just need an IMAP mail account.
This works for me quite nicely (I have a PC workstation and a notebook) with an IMAP account from my mail provider (1&1). Just set up the IMAP account in Kmail on both computers as "Disconnected IMAP" (this is important as plain IMAP doesn't work) and in Kmail settings go to "Misc" -> "Groupware" and set "Enable IMAP resources functionality". As format I use "Kolab 2 (XML)". After this you should be able to add an addressbook of resource type "Addressbook on IMAP server via Kmail". In my opinion, this is the preferred solution for sharing PIM data across multiple computers. |
