When I open a document with kwrite it starts up in full screen mode and I can not get to the taskbar to take it out of that mode. How do I get these windows unstuck?

You can access the window options by pressing Alt+F3 (same like the right click at the title bar).
To avoid the fullscreen mode, you can have a look at the settings for this window:
Right click at the title bar -> Advanced -> Settings for ...
Maybe look at both of the available options.
I'm German so the texts could be a bit different.

Hope it helps,
Jan

Continuing Jan's instructions, the English version,

Advanced > Special Application Settings (I assume it's only kwrite that's doing this) > Geometry tab. You'll probably find that one or more of the Maximise settings are checked. If you can't find the cause, try, on the same page, checking Position and Size. It will initially fill in the current position and size. You can edit this to some arbitrary amount and apply it. It should then be possible for you to resize the window to your requirement, and drag it to optimum position. Going back to the geometry tab you should see the new entries there. Check Remember on the drop-down list for both.

Alt + F3 does nothing and the task bar is being covered up by kwirte so I can not get the the Avanced settings. Also there is no title bar to click either.

Maybe start systemsettings, go to Window-Behavior and then to Window-Specific.
Look if something with KWrite is there. If yes, try to change it or delete it.

In addition to JanGerrit's posting, a new button should also be available, which should allow you to create a new behaviour to override this incorrect behaviour.

I see what you are talking about but I am not sure how to set it up. Can you walk me through it?

System Settings > Window Behaviour > Window-Specific > New > Detect Window Properties.
Select the problematic KWrite window.

I can only guess which options are required but selecting "Ignore Requested Geometry" to "Force" and checking the box may help. Also try forcing a maximum size slightly smaller than your screen.

Note that the only rule you should have in that KCM is the default "Disable focus stealing prevention for Xv"

I tried Alt+F3 but that too didn't work.
