hey guys,

after reading the faq about akonadi, i have a question about how it works.

Can a single Akonadi instance be used by multiple users?
No. There has to be one Akonadi server instance per user. However, it is possible to use a shared database server.

Can I access the Akonadi server on a remote machine?
No. Akonadi is not a groupware server. It's a local cache only.

no problem about the first point, i've only have to manage 1 user.

but i have more than one pc, therefore i want to sync for example my calender data between notebook and desktop pc.
so my idea was to use an mysql server, to which i can connect through the internet, and use the same database for all akonadi instances on the different machines.
is this possible? and will my data been sync this way?
english is not my native language, i hope you get what i mean ;)

As long as you do only access the database with one system at any given moment, that should indeed work.

If you want to have concurrent access (from more than one machine at any given time) to you PIM data, you should consider using a groupware server such as Kolab.

This implies that if a user is logged in multiple times and using Kontact, then that user is in trouble.

Is that correct?

Yes that is correct. Although instead of Kontact it is for all Akonadi using applications.

No, it means you can only run one Akonadi server instance per user. Applikations using Akonadi can run as often as they permit (e.g. an application could not allow to be started more than once).

The only problem for multiple session currently is that D-Bus only has session busses, no "user" bus, thus any other session than the first one needs to re-use the first one's session bus if process running in it should be used from the new session as well.
