Major Konqueror failure

Mon Mar 22, 2010 4:32 pm
I tried previewing a .odt file in Konqueror using Kword. Oops. Now if I open Konqueror it will only open into that document, and if I try to go elsewhere it crashes. I shut it down and rebooted the computer... and here's the really funny thing. I had Konqueror shut down before I rebooted, but when I logged back in it popped back up (into the same document) as if it had been open when the session closed out. I'm using Konqueror 4.3.4 on Debian Squeeze.

Have you tried using the system monitor to locate which kword files are open and killing them if any are before you close Konqueror?

Yeah, and it always opens a new one. I find the process, kill it, them do another search for kword processes, get a new number, kill that one... and then there's another.

Try removing the contents of /tmp/kde-$(id -un)/closeditems/

No joy. This problem is bizzare.

Try moving $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/apps/konqueror elsewhere.

Thanks, but I won't have a chance to test that... I was just logging on to tell you I fixed it. I uninstalled Kword and opened Konqueror. It opened that document again, but this time using the Okular kpart. I was able to close that without crashing Konqueror. I then stopped and restarted Konqueror and everything was normal. I reinstalled Kword and all is well.

The moral of the story, it seems, is don't preview in Konqueror using Kword! Something isn't working right. If you do run into the problem uninstalling Kword, closing the document, and then reinstalling Kword does the trick.

Another workaround would be to use System Settings > Advanced > File Assocations > Embedded, with the correct mimetype to ensure Okular was used.
