Hello,
I've set up a "Web Folder" using the webdav protocol on a synology NAS. I can access this folder using Dolpin. Network folder --> Add a network folder--> setting up the server IP, login and password. I can browse all the files and folders easily. However, if I want to open/edit an .odt file (openoffice), the file will be downloaded on the local folder /tmp. When I save my file, the changes won't be updated on the NAS. --> useless 1°) Is there a way to modify this behavior using the Webdav probtocol 2°) What is the easyest solution to set up a collaboration folder on a NAS that will be share with 4 co-workers usin different OS (linux, mac and Vista) This folder has to be accessible outside of the local network thank for your help |

This is due to a weakness in the way that OpenOffice works. Because Dolphin doesn't know if OpenOffice supports remote files, Dolphin downloads it locally then instructs OpenOffice to open it. Problem is that OpenOffice forks immediately, causing the process Dolphin launched to exit. Dolphin notes that the file hasn't changed and removes it, not knowing that OpenOffice is editing the file in another process.
Webdav should work perfectly fine as far as I know for both the Windows/Mac users, and for Linux users if they use webdav as a FUSE file system. See http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/davfs2 for further details.

Thank you very much for your help.
You are right. It's too bad there is a "communication problem" between OpenOffice and Dolphin. It works perfectly well if I open a .jpg file using Gnewview or an odt file using KWord. I'll will have a try with kword, but every-time I use this soft, I'll get VERY frustrated. Nothing works ! Regarding Windows, I have the same problem. It seems Windows does not know openoffice is able to work with WebDav. I haven't try with Word. I'll try the FUSE mounting later in this week. I'll keep you updated |
