Hi,
I have used kontact for the last four years and have found it to meet all my needs. I am now on Kubuntu 8.10 (the lure was too great) and kontact does not behave quite as it ought to, but I'm sure it is going to be sorted hopefully sooner rather than later. Here my question: I have my kmail folder in a separate partition and symlink it into ~/.kde/share/apps/ (I do the same with the calendar and address files). Problem is that my email settings are not taken over I've got the emailidentities file linked but it doesn't appear to make any difference... Any ideas out there?

You are probably missing other config files, e.g. kmailrc Also check that you linked into the correct KDE directory, e.g. by checking the user-local part of the following command's output % kde4-config --path config Cheers, _

Nice, thanks - there was a bunch of stuff in the config directory (which I hadn't checked beforehand...).
I copied all kmail* from my old config directory to the new one. Unfortunately the email accounts still didn't get transferred but the whole kmail experience is now certainly less alien Thanks!

Maybe the following script, I found on ubuntuusers.de will help to also export the account data, but please note that it was written for arch-linux and the paths maybe wrong if your settings are in ~/.kde4 instead of ~/.kde for example. But the config files which are backuped with the script should also contain account data... I didn't try it yet, maybe you can check it?

Wicked stuff! Will check the scripts and distribute if they work. At last I see an example of kdialog and dcop as well The kdialog tutorial was woefully short on info for the non-initiated...

I have now tried out this script! I have changed the paths in the backup-script, as I described in this post: showthread.php?tid ... 6#pid13146
So the scripts are working fine! |

I've posted it in another forum and got 40 hits in no time at all. I reckon this was sorely needed! Even better if Kontact could be made so that it has its own folder in which all the applications nest (at least with links)...
But this is just peachy!

I found out the hard way a few months back that if your backup device (USB thumb or USB drive) is VFAT that it will reject all the stored KMail individual e-mail files. The naming convention of the e-mail files is against VFAT rules and it drops them. At least that's what it appeared to be.

Depends on your mail box format.
maildir contains colons in the filenames and this is a forbidden character on VFAT. mbox should work. In any case I'd recommend backing up an archive of the whole mail folder. This has the nice side effect of also restoring permissions correctly since at most the permissions on the archive change when being copied. Cheers, _
