According to the documentation, the numeric data type is a text field with restricted input. Presumably, arithmetic operations (e.g. value sum of a category) are not possible.
Are numerical operations intended for later?

Correct, there's no sort of built-in calculations. Some of the reports do calculations within the XSLT processing, but that can be tricky and sometimes limited. There's a related wishlist item: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=338017
