Hi!

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.3 and i recently upgraded from KDE 4.5 to 4.6 beta1. Overall it performs quite well, but i have an annoying issue with apps that uses the "Places" panel (Dolphin, file chooser dialogs,Gwenview...). The startup of these apps is very slow (5-6 sec).

I think this is related to the places panel, in kde 4.6 beta my hdd partitions are mounted on the panel in the same way as the removable devices:

When i position the pointer to one of these entries the entire panel behaves very unresponsive. I don't want these entries in my panel, i have my own references to these partitions. I found a "hide" option, but the startup still remained slow. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I concur that the startup of Dolphin is much slower than before. The mounted partitions in Places was there in 4.5 and did not cause slow startup for me. Maybe it is the enhanced Nepomuk integration but it is definitely slower.

I ran Dolphin through Callgrind and discovered that it seems to be making a colossal number of D-Bus calls. It is likely either the UDisks Solid backend or Nepomuk is responsible for this ( dbus-monitor however showed more UDisks activity )

It's udisks. I had to disable udisks from treating my at-boot mounted SD card on my EeePC or the login would take minutes. This is worth reporting a bug (assigning it to Solid).

Just corroborating that I'm seeing similar symptoms following an upgrade from Kubuntu 10.4 to 10.10 (which I decided on when it became clear I needed to do a fresh install after mucking around with my hard disk's partitioning).

See the related (Aug/Sep 2010) discussion here:

http://dot.kde.org/2010/08/31/kde-releases-451

Symptoms include a general instability of (at least) Dolphin, file chooser dialogs, and Gwenview. In some instances Dolphin would *eventually* yield a file browser window (after ~20 seconds). Turning off tooltips didn't seem to help much, but closing the Info pane on a window (when one finally opened) seemed to eliminate the problem in that and all subsequently spawned windows. Trying to look at an individual directory's or file's Properties, however, (e.g. via a right-click contextual menu selection) would again take unusually long (e.g. 10-20 seconds or more).

This suggests to me that there's an issue in how Dolphin etc. are accessing metadata (or perhaps the condition/format of some of the metadata itself). Eliminating the existing ~/.thumbnails (as suggested in some places) didn't help, nor did deleting all .directory files, nor rebuilding the KDE cache using kbuildsycoca4.

I'm now running KDE 4.5.1 (Qt 4.7.0). Also, I'm seeing a number of posts elsewhere suggesting possible connections with libdbus, so I'll mention I'm running libdbus 1.4.0-0ubuntu1. I'll post any further relevant details as I figure out what those might be.

Has anyone submitted a bug report about this? Or is it no longer an issue?

Difficult to tell, but I believe this is reflected in bug #235166. Have just bumped it with a comment, and in the process realized the following:

Unchecking "Enable Nepomuk Semantic Desktop" in System Settings->Desktop Search appears to eliminate this problem entirely. Dolphin windows and Gwenview open and display contents immediately, even the Information pane works fine. Again, this is Kubuntu 10.10 (KDE 4.5.1).

Thanks for prompting me to double-check the bug reports--turned out there was a viable solution (for me, anyway) hiding there.

Please ensure that your have the Virtuoso Soprano backend installed, as that is required for efficient use of Nepomuk.
