KDE-4.6 does not respect screen power saving settings

Hi all,

I don't know if this is the right forum for this post, if it is not please move it accordingly.

I started testing out KDE-4.6 beta2, and it works great despite some minor annoyances. One of those has to do with screen power saving.

I have everything power-saving related turned off in System Settings (it's a desktop computer and I manually turn off the screen when I leave). However, screen is still turned off after ~10 minutes. I have only one profile in Powerdevil, though I created another one since KDE was reporting that the profile selected did not exist.

Nevertheless, screen is still turned off after 10 minutes, like if the setting was not reflected. Is this a known bug that will be fixed before final? Can I do something about it?

Linux is Gentoo, using an NVIDIA 9600GT (260.19.21) and Zen kernel 2.6.36.

Thanks in advance.

Open System Settings > Power Management > Global Settings, and ensure profiles have been assigned for all 4 states. Then go to profiles and make sure all actions are unticked.

Thank you very much for your help and attention.

Since this is a desktop computer, I only have one option available:

And here are the profiles defined:

The "ghost" profile, which yields the error I reported earlier here:

http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2r3j9dv&s=7

As you can see, in none of the available profiles do I have that option. I thought for a minute that the kernel screen blanker could be kicking in, but I thought xorg disabled that.

I can confirm. When I log on I get a powerdevil warning during kdm login.

Also on gentoo x86_64, zen kernel 2.6.36-zen2

If you aren't using HAL, it is a bug in Powerdevil. I talked to its developer and he said it's fixed now, so it'll be in the upcoming RC.

A workaround is to log out then back in: Powerdevil will pick up UPower and you will be able to use power management settings.

As Einar already suggested, I strongly advise to verify this behavior with KDE 4.6 >=RC1, or simply by compiling trunk. If the behavior still persists, I suggest you to file a bug, including the log of kded4 when the issue happens.

Just to be on the safe side in case this happens again with >=RC1, which is the correct log to attach? The output of .xsession-errors?

I'm still seeing this on Kubuntu 4.6 rc2. I get the PowerDevil error on login. Something like...

"Profile 'Performance' selected but it doesn't exist".

and thus my screen turns off after 10 minutes, even during movies.

Open System Settings > Power Management. In "Profile Assignment" select a profile from each drop down menu, and apply the settings.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work (using RC2). The three bottom ones are greyed out for me (which is not surprising since there's no battery in my computer). For the top one "Performance" is already selected, which is the only pre-defined profile here.

However, when I change something in that profile and hit apply I get a message stating that I've selected the performance profile but it does not exist. That happens even if I create my own profile except that it substitutes the profile name in the message.

Can you reproduce under a new user? There might be some migration issues.
