I compile Calligra daily, and always just save in .odt. Yesterday though I had to send a document to a non FOSS person, who I'm sure would only have MS Office installed, and when I went to save as / export was surprised to see no options except odt and HTML.

Is it possible to save a .doc or .docx from Calligra? Am I just missing a -dev library or is this a philosophical stance thing?

Just wondering so I can get it working if possible, or at least so I don't waste time trying if it's not.

I don't think it's possible to save in a non-ODF format, but if your recipient has a relatively new version of office, it should be able to open up ODF files just as well as doc/docx files.

Doc/Docx export doesn't exist yet. I wouldn't recommend sending ODF since that can give trouble in MS Office.

Thanks. They are on a recent Office, but on Macs, and it seems that ODF is only supported in *Windows version* of Office 2007, SP2 and above. :/

So it seems there is no way for me to send them an editable document, other than maybe HTML... Not really impressed. I guess I can save as an odf and then export it to .doc in LibreOffice...

I agree, I think it is a real show stopper for calligra. I cannot use it simply for that reason. I work as an educator and need to be able to send files that look the same when they are opened with an MSOffice application. No matter how great the calligra suite is, this one lacking option is a dealbreaker. I know it probably has to do with finances as I can imagine something would have to be paid to Microsoft to provide this service. Unless consumer laws can demand a universal open standard for editable documents, there is little hope that the Calligra Suite will ever become as popular as Libreoffice or MSOffice. I hope KDE developers will one day give this aspect some attention.

Hello, one of the plus points of Words is that it is able to read and write docx format whereas good old Abiword can only handle the older-style doc's. I just pop the odt from CalligraWords into Abiword if anyone should want a doc rather than a docx (assuming the format is not too sophisticated), but usually people want docx these days. Actually this is quite a helpful point because it reminded me that I have been noticing that when I save a file as docx in CalligraWords and then open it again in CalligraWords, the first page is duplicated. Is it just me?? Will do some more tests....

And as far as I remember, saving as .doc in abiword actually saves an rtf file with a .doc extension.
