Hi monke,

There are two possible answers to this question. I don't know which one you want so I'll answer both.

Technically KIgo does the counting by delegating it to the AI engine. With 99% certainty this will be GNU Go in your case. GNU Go has a good understanding of the position and the protocol which is used between KIgo and GNU Go contains a command to the AI to evaluate the current position and give back a full list of which side owns which intersections.

Game wise, the counting is done by assessing the ability of each group to live. If a group is not able to live on its own and is surrounded by live groups of the other color then it is dead. An empty intersection that is surrounded by live groups of only one color is owned by that color and adds 1 point to the score. An intersection with a dead stone (part of a dead group) adds 2 points to the other color. The total score is the points of one side minus the points of the other side.

There is a special case where a group is not able to live on its own but an attempt to kill it would instead kill the attacker. This special case is called seki and the empty intersections around a seki is worth 0 points to each side.

I have the same question. Unfortunately, the answer doesn't solve the problem.

I looked at the kigo source code - no answers there. However, as the answer above points out, scoring is handled by the underlying go engine (gnugo) so I will have a look at that source code to see if I can work it out.

I have a game with the following stats:

B W
Handicap 4 0
Territory 25 12
Passes 1 2
Captures 1 1
Komi 0 4.5
Dead 9 1
--------------------------------
Score <7.5 7.5

See if you can work that one out!

Putting in territory - 2 * dead as the answer above suggests gives B on 7 and W on 10 - not right.

Any ideas anyone?
