Chess and KDE

Tue Oct 14, 2008 1:59 pm
What´s the status of chess in KDE? All I can find of the supposedly current generation is that´s it´s supposed to be called Tagua, but that looks dead as a stone. Is nobody working on this anymore? We already have very nice card and mahjongg games in KDE4, and a good chess game would be great to have, but somebody has to make it.

One more vote for a KDE chess game. But I haven't seen a good chess game in ages, so..... :-(

A more modern front-end to online chess servers would be a very nice thing, the only one I can get working is xchess. :(

To tell you the truth KDEGames has been looking for a good chess/checkers implementation in QT4 for a while now. Yet in vain.
As for Tagua, last time I heared from it's developers at aKademy 2007. We spoke about it's merger with KDEGames at the time. Unfortunatly they have all vanished since. Not sure what happend though.
Early this year we hav tried to look for peopel willing to take over, but no one has shown any interest so far. :-(
Sorry to disappoint you.

For KDE 3, there is Knights (http://knights.sourceforge.net ). Not so developed lately it seems, but it should work nicely.

I use knights, but playing on online chess servers stopped working since KDE4. The game is always broken when my opponent castles.

The only thing that stop me from writing my own chess app, is that i don't really know how to start. I tried to write a small module for Kopete (in KDE3) but i failed completely.

The result: I'm willing to spend some time but I'm to new to programming KDE apps to do this on my own.

Bye the way: Merels and queen are missing also ...

Don't worry, if you find the right person to make it together with you I think it should be worked. Don't work alone. This chess game is a great idea.

I can certify that http://live.chess.com/ used to work in Konqueror 4.4 and Konqueror 4.5 with KHTML as the rendering engine but then suddenly, Klash stop displaying and then I can not play chess with Konqueror anymore.

FYI, Klash is " GNU Shockwave Flash (SWF) player - Standalone player for KDE which is a free standalone SWF movie player for KDE that use AGG
as the rendering backend."

Now, I use latest Opera 11.11 and I it renders sounds when moving or capturing pieces.

A good chess application for KDE: +1

Support for online web chess servers like http://live.chess.com/ in Konqueror 4.6+: +1

A more modern front-end to online chess servers: +1

best regards,

Gérard
