KDE...the only DE around that ain't shipping a classic chess game.

I would like to ask any developer to do so; I know your sitting there, shaking your head and thinking "thats such a simple task I might as well not bother!"

But, here's a twist; show the computer thinking about it's moves, and the players!

That leads to a site of an old chess bot that did just that. again, going one step further, you might even wish to get said chess program to point out fatal flaws in the player's gamestyle...
