KWordQuiz with images?

Sat Oct 30, 2010 3:27 pm
Hi

I am currently learning Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) and I was thinking about trying to create software programs to aid my studying. I had posted in a few forums and was given a link to the KDE Education project.

I've tried KWordQuiz and this fits perfectly for what I am looking for. I was thinking that it would be great if there was a application similar to KWordQuiz but which used images instead of words. By this I mean an image appears and an image is shown and you have to guess the word that the image is showing in the language you are learning i.e. if a picture of a clock appears you have to enter the word clock in the chosen language.

At the moment I can think of 3 possible issues with this:
* Possible patent infringements as I believe Rossetta Stone uses this?
* Large size of download of the data files due to using images
* Difficulty in guessing the exact meaning of what is shown i.e. a picture of a daffodil is shown but is the word that you are supposed to guess flower or daffodil.

I would be grateful if you think this could work as a piece of software or if not any other ideas.

1. I doubt there could be patent infringements if you simply replace a word with an image
2. KDE uses svg images which are not large
3. The program could accommodate several alternative answers; that is not hard to include.

Why don't you try to write it in python? There are KDE python bindings.

Thanks for the information John.

As I have to learn the QT/KDE API, I thought it might as well learning c++ (I haven't used it in years so I reckon the learning curve should not be that steep).

I've tried KWordQuiz and I like it. There are a few improvements that I would like to see on it. I can hone my KDE coding skills on that before I attempt an application on my own. This is of course providing the author of KWordQuiz allows others to make amendments. Once I feel confident enough with my coding skills I'll contact the author(s).
