multiple/sub Trackers?

Mon Dec 24, 2012 5:09 pm
Hello there! New skrooge user here with a question on the use of Trackers. On the surface, they seem like a pretty neat way to track expenses for an event such as the holiday example in the manual. What I'm curious about - and not finding anything jumping out at me - is whether it is possible to tag an expense with multiple Trackers, or have sub-categories within a Tracker.

An example of what I would like to be able to Track... lets say I have a hobby that is not inexpensive and I would like to track the amount of money I'm spending on it in order to help budget funds in the future. As a part of this hobby, I travel to several large events each year (may be different individual events for any given year). Each event has its own set of costs - travel, lodging, food, event fees, etc. that would normally fall across a spectrum of 'categories' in skrooge - Auto:Fuel, Food:Dining-Out, Leisure:Sporting Goods, etc. I would want to track these expenses both for the individual event, and for the overall hobby for the year.

It doesn't appear that skrooge allows me to assign multiple Trackers to any given expense, and I don't see any option for creating a sub-Tracker...

Any suggestions on how to handle the above?

Thanks,

Monte

At the moment, it is not possible to assign multiple trackers to an operation, and it will probably never be possible due to their nature.

However, and It's not really documented anywhere, trackers can indeed be more or less nested, by using the same syntax as categories :
Code: Select all
event 2012 > Food
event 2012 > Travel
event 2012 > Travel > Fuel

While each tracker will appear on its line, without a "tree" representation, the categorization can be used in the report module. If there is a real need of handling hierarchical trackers, we can enhance that in future versions.

Alternatively, you can also use "user defined properties", as described in this documentation page.

On a final note, we are thinking about adding a "tag" capability in skrooge, but didn't go too far in our reflexion : should it be *yet* another function, shall it replace user defined properties, or shall we drop the idea is not clear in our minds... 8)

Nested trackers is a very interesting feature +1. Are there plans to add full support?

I dont think it is necessary to have nested trackers if properties are "Multivalued"

currently each property holds exactly one value.
e.g. Attendees>Someone

but i cannot do this:
Attendees>someone;someone;someone

Hierarchical structure would be even better
e.g.Education>Class>Semester
Education>First Year>Sem II

I understand its hard to implement.i used similar function in ms money called classes.

and also property values should be bound to that particular property only i.e. if i select a property name only values previously used for that property should be shown in the suggestion list.

Also, multiple attachments should be attached with same property name.
