I am using Ubuntu 16.04 (all up to date) with the default Gnome desktop
Skrooge is version 1.9.3Beta with KDS 4.14.16

The left hand side toolbar buttons is corrupted, but the buttons still work. A couple of other spots the date fields are squashed up. What are my options to fix this? nothing else on my computer does this.

I never saw that before.

Nevertheless, do you know that you can install the latest version of skrooge (2.5) for ubuntu 16.04 by using my ppa name "ppa-kf5"?
