Hello,
I've noticed some beahvior which may be intended, but for me not desired. Let's say I have budget for year 2018 some categories and coresponding amounts as I plan my year would be. And also I know that on montlhy basis I can control spending much better and I can better plan monthly budget. So there it is. I have big budget for 2018 and 12 monthly ones. Big one shows nice picture of overall spending a smaller ones help me stay on the line. At least that was the idea, reality is somehow different. (not real reality, the skrooge budgeting one). To be very specific this example coudl help understand: I have category "CAR" (for spendings regards an automotive vehicle) I want to budget and monitor my spendings so I create a budget for year 2018 on an amount of 4000 euro. I also want to watch my monthly spendings on a car but they are not the same throughout the year. (On may and november I will change tires for winter/summer ones. On july and august I will spend more on fuel due to longer rides. On September there is a scheduled maintenance service check and so on.) So lets say: Jan 250, Feb 350, Mar 300, Apr 300, May 400, Jun 350, Jul 400, Aug 400, Sep 250, Oct 300, Nov 400, Dec 300 (total 4000) With this setup I only see monthly budgets slowly filling up but yhe year one is intact like no euro was spend on a CAR category. For my perspective it is a bug. But maybe someone can enlighten me and explain this behavior. Thanks either way. |

Hey, schunka,
It's not a bug. In fact, Skrooge is based on "Envelope Budgeting". The principles are:
In Skrooge, an envelop is represented by a monthly or yearly budget. When you enter an operation, Skrooge takes the money from one budget AND ONLY one. In you case, all "CAR" expenditures are taken from the monthly budgets and never from yearly budget. This is the expected behavior. My recommendation to cover your need is:
By this way, you will see that if you spend more than expected one month, the difference will be put on the following month. This will help you to guarantee that you don't spend more than expected at the end of the year event if you did it during some month. I hope this will help you. Regards. |
