If NO then you have an issue in your system but I don't know where.
If YES then you should have sound in Skrooge too.

No sounds other than the one generic sound and the notification bars.
I am looking at youtube for others that may have sound issues in the linux mint 18.3 and there is someone who has issues with no sound in a game..he has suggested the issue is in the Java program so l am looking into that.

I think this is not a good track. Indeed, Skrooge is not developed in Java.
wind_rose_2 wrote:l realize your area of discussion is the Skrooge program but any help on where l might look would be appreciated. I am going to try loading another version of Linux or possibly a combination of the Beta 1.9.3 Skrooge as l did have sound if you recall in that version.
Dave

Skrooge 1.x was based on KDE4. KDE4 is deprecated. So, it's mandatory to migrate on KF5. Skrooge 2.x is based on KF5.

You can try to open the "Notification" section from the KDE settings and try to select an other application.
Test if you have sound for other applications.

OK l am back with you and have been busy with this as it is driving me crazy..but l am learning!
Firstly l have taken my old test computer, a Toshiba U300 and loaded it with a fresh copy of Linux Mint 18.3 Mate (not cinnamon) I did a complete new install and the Mate files have been verified.
I then went to the Software manager and installed the Beta 1.9.3 from there.
I then loaded in some financial data into the empty program.
l went to the settings>config notifications and tested all 4 sounds generated for the program...they all worked fine.

I then went to the "Open File Dialogue" box in Cofig Notifications and when l clicked on it ,the box opened to ..ROOT Dir ...NOT my DAVE Dir as happens in my Lenovo laptop
i went from ..Root>usr>share>sounds and was able to change and hear sounds!

On the Toshiba U300 with Mate l then went to Software Sources to verify the PPAs (Mankowski kf5) were not included.
I then loaded the PPAs from the console and verified they were in the Software Sources.

I then went to Software Manager to verify that Skrooge kf5 was available now and loaded it...the 2.12.0 would not load, it progressed about half way then stopped and left the Beta version operational
I then returned to the Software Manager and deleted the Skrooge Beta and attemtped again to load the Skrooge kf5 from the Software manager.
It would not load..abain it only went about half way and stopped.

I then returned to the console....Removed Skrooge..and reloaded the Skrooge kf5 from the console.

The install from the console went fine BUT now there are no sounds!
I went to settings>config Notifications....no sounds played when l clicked on the button.

I then checked the boxes as you had recently instructed so as to enable the Task bar pop-up and the Mark taskbar entry...still no sounds at all.

I then clicked on the Open File Dialogue box beside the sound selected to be played, and now instead of opening the Root>usr>share> sounds as it had it the 1.9.3 Beta version it would open into Dave as in the Lenovo laptop.

All of which leads me to believe there is something wrong.. :)

OK lets try this.

When l am on my Desktop (Not Skrooge) and l go to Menu>Files>File System>Usr>Share>Sounds> l open to a page of Sound Files with ICONS.
I can select one of these ICONS...... /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-App-Positive.ogg .......(and a VLC Media Notification Box opens) ..and plays the sound...which l can hear.

Now
When l am in Skrooge>Settings>Configure Notifications. The notification box opens..l then click on the OPEN FILE DIALOGUE box and it then opens to File System>Usr>Share>Sounds but these sounds shown ARE NOT ICONS they are a list of the sound files, and when l click on one, instead opening the VLC media Player and playing the sound, it takes me back to the Skrooge program and has placed the selected sound file into the Configure Notifications Box in the Box beside the arrow you click to hear the sound. BUT it does not play the sound.

It is as though the sound file requires the Media Player to associate the selected sound with the Skrooge Program but it is not. And there is no sound played.

Hope you had a good weekend.

I think you have an issue in the association defined on your system.

This is normal, you can not put "local" path (like /home/dave/Pictures/Screenshot%20from%202018-05-08%2014-42-16.png).
You must :
1- Put the files online with a service like this: https://imgbb.com/
2- Use the url returned in (1) on this forum

Regards.

I went to the Terminal and typed in the command listed in the document "kcmshell5 filetypes" and found that this was not even loaded onto the KDE Systems Settings so l installed it from the Terminal and now it can be found in the System Settings. While on the Terminal it had opened a dialogue box as described in the Document you provided and l ,(while l think l did as l am not fully aware of how to do all this) clicked on the file type "ogg" and added it to the Skrooge associations and had moved Skrooge to the top of the preferred order of programs associated with playing the sound. I then went back to Skrooge and there still was no sounds playing so l then rebooted and tried again...no sounds. I then went back to the KDE System Settings and found that the newly installed File Associations was now found in the KDE System Settings menu listed under Personalization>applications>file associations but when l opened to the File associations menu and clicked sounds it would not open further as it had using the Terminal?

You said: "clicked on the file type "ogg" and added it to the Skrooge associations and had moved Skrooge to the top of the preferred order"

NO. Skrooge must not be associated with sound file.
Take care that:
1- Sound files are well associated with application able to play sounds (example: vlc)
2- Skrooge is associated ONLY with .skg extension

I have gone back from the Terminal and have removed Skrooge Fro the Applications List I think? This is terribly confusing and frustrating.
