Currency converter working plugin

Mon Jul 25, 2022 12:12 am
Hi, I've been using Skrooge for a while, but only recently I needed to use multiple currencies. I tried all of the available plugins (Arch Linux package, Skrooge 2.27.0 if that matters); they all failed with one error or the other (from my understanding the underlying APIs have changed and the plugin has not been updated, but I might be wrong). Feeling a bit lost, I found a post (https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=210&t=162312) recommending ratesapi.io; that also fails, as when I try to register I get redirected to apilayer.com and the API key provided there does not seem to work (even with curls following the official docs). So, my questions are:

    1. what is the currently recommended plugin for currency exchange rates?
    2. would it be helpful to do some proper investigation and remove the plugins that have stopped working from the codebase?
    3. any idea on how to get the apilayer key to work (their support did not get back to my request -.-')?

thanks a lot for any suggestion!

I am using 'exchangeratesapi.io' and it works fine. I had to get an API key on their web and configure it at Skrooge settings > Units > APY Keys

Thanks for confirming. I tried again, but when creating a new account at https://manage.exchangeratesapi.io I always get redirected to create one with apilayer.com (maybe they integrated with the latter recently but still maintained their previous independent userbase). I also got a message back from apilayer, saying that with their token we would need to use a different api endpoint -.-'

I'll experiment a bit in the next days and maybe open up an MR...

Update: I tried a few times using the new api endopoints and it always fails with some error (even with the exact curl commands provided by the official documentation). I asked for more support, but I didn't hear anything back :(

Is there any other service known to work?

In case somebody stumbles on this post: I ended up opening a bug report and a couple of hours later the code for a new provider landed in `master`https://invent.kde.org/office/skrooge/-/commit/c45b0abf7f3630be860bb29e5d7e90b031d860b5. This should be then fixed in the next released version with the dedicated `exchangerates-apilayer" source :)
