KMM and Skrooge features comparison?

Mon Sep 27, 2010 12:58 pm
Hi,

I know skrooge is pretty much the new kid aournd the block compared to KMM, but looks like it has been making a good progress. Has someone created a feature comparison chart between KMM and skrooge yet? For example, investments, loans, bill reminders, scheduled payments, payee name resolution, automatic category/sub-category assignment on imported transactions, online banking etc.

Also, as a test, I tried importing my KMM file into skrooge and at a first glance I saw the bank names didn't get carried over properly. Is skrooge able to import ALL information from KMM? If I later decide to switch back to KMM, will I have to manually enter any information back into KMM?

Thanks

Not that I'm aware of...

Skrooge intends to be somewhat simpler than KMM, so there are a few things you may not find. As to your specific questions:
  • Investments: Yes, managed through "units". A unit can be a currency, but also a share, for example.
  • Loans: not in skrooge.
  • bill reminders, scheduled payments: You can schedule operations, and you can choose how many days upfront you want it reminded.
  • automatic category/sub-category assignment on imported transactions: yes, but you have to define rules yourself first. This is what we call "search & process", and it can go far beyond automatic category assignment
  • online banking: no, and probably never due to the lack of a standard protocol for that. I know about aqbanking, but it seems to be used almost exclusively in germany, as far as I remember

You may want to read briefly the (slightly outdated) online doc, it should give you an idea of what is possible

It should be able to import & export everything. But there might be some bugs here and there. Would you mind open us a bug report if you can reproduce this ?

Thanks :)

Thank you for your answers. I did submit a bug for the bank name not showing up. I was surprised to see somone already assigned to work on this bug -- that was unexpectedly quick :).

Please don't limit Skrooge to be a small player; I think it has a great potential to be an excellent personal finance software. Keep up the good work!

Regards

Someone being assigned is cool. Someone solving it is even better xD ! Stephane committed a fix today...

Thanks for the nice words :)
