I've got some questions to make sure I get it right.
First I don't quite understand what 'mode' is. Let me describe something:

I keep my money in:

an account in a bank
a prepaid virtual card
PayPal account
and in cash

So are items mentioned above called a 'mode'? Or they fall in 'Bank and Account' category?

Or maybe a 'mode' is something general, like 'cash', 'money transfer' (be it from a bank, prepaid card or PayPal)?

The general question I'd like to ask is how to deal with money in cash? Because it doesn't suit 'Bank and Account' category now I hold all my money under one account. But I'd like to keep it more consistent in upcoming year.

Second issue I'd like to talk about is how to deal with 'reconciliation' option. Today I've got it! Finally! (thanks to the documentation).

Let's assume I can keep my money as accounts I described in a list. So how to reconcile money from different sources? I don't mind where money is from. It's mine and it has to suit my book.
So I'd like to reconcile it from different accounts. Is it possible?

Here are the guidelines:

• An Account is exactly what you expect it to be, i.e. as in a bank account. For me a paypal account is a bank account, that is automatically filled from another regular account.
• The Mode is the way you used to spend the money from an account. Usual values are Credit Card, Cheque, Transfer.

Ask yourself how many accounts do you own, and create an skrooge account for each one. Then, everytime you spend money, ask yourself which mean (aka mode) you used to spend it.

Well, cash is something a bit difficult, because once you took it from the bank, it is out of your account. The "real" operation you should register is the operation you made to get some cash out of your account... But at that time you haven't really spent it, so you do not know how to categorize it, right ? Here are a few options, choose which one suits you best :

• Treat your wallet as an account: getting some cash out of the bank into your wallet becomes a transfer between two accounts. Then, every time you buy something in cash, you register an operation in Skrooge. This way, the money you have in your wallet should always match the corresponding amount in your skrooge "wallet account".
• Use the "split" function in Skrooge to split the cashback operation into suboperations that reflect how you spent cash.

Following cash in a software like Skrooge (or any other software) is not easy, they are not really meant for this.

The only way to reconcile is account per account. Because your bank only gives you per account statements, as far as I know .

This way, the money you have in your wallet should always match the corresponding amount in your skrooge "wallet account".

OK, now I see. Treating wallet as an account is a good idea and fit my needs. The only small caveat is that I had to use Bank field so I had to fill both Bank and Account with 'Wallet' (for example).

Following cash in a software like Skrooge (or any other software) is not easy, they are not really meant for this.

Frankly speaking I don't understand it. Why don't these application deal with money in cash? Are all money operation people do virtual? I don't think so. At least they take money out of a cash machine, right? Or am I too retarded, missed something and hence wrong?
Maybe it's Skrooge which should head up and doesn't follow suit? Please, consider implementing dealing with money in cash. You may be the first who will do it!

Mmh, you might be right, after all .

Let's think about it (Stéphane, if you read this, please give us your thoughts):

• Treat wallet as a specific type of account, with no bank associated, and that can never be reconciled
• Provide a function that asks you how much do you still have in your wallet, and that will create a "fake" operation in Skrooge (category of expense: to be setup by the user) so that amounts are aligned.
• Add a function to draw cash from an account (a kind of transfer, in fact)
• There might be several wallets (wife, husband, kids...). It should be possible to transfer money from a wallet to another

Looks like we could maybe do it without too much impact, just creating a specific type of account with some slightly different behaviour. What do you think ?

I don't know if I did it right but I used reconciliation this way:
up till recently (want to change it) had many unknown expenses, so I typed in final balance and calculated money I had both in an account and a wallet.
So, yes, it was very helpful to use this option.

Suppose you forgot to mark your operation from a wallet. After all your money won't check. Reconciliation (or kinda other name) would be helpful.

I often use cash for paying many things, not just 10 or 20 but 300 or 400 for a month
I would like to consider cash reserves as an account: an account that can never be negative, of course
