New Features

Thu Sep 15, 2011 1:52 pm
Hi all,
I'm using skrooge for some time now. It is a great piece of software, but i miss some fatures. While I search the Web, I couldn't find any feature request page or anything similar to the idea. That's why I end up here.
Features I'm looking for:
close (freeze/postpone/hide... whatever) an account
Use case
  • When I close an account at the bank I'm also stop using it in a skrooge. Deleting is not a solution, because lot of tables and charts will be affected.
  • When this happens I just keep account in a list, but whats bugging me is that this account is still usable in all forms, which in real world isn't true.
  • It is not a real trouble for one or two accounts, but for 5 or even 15 or more it's unbearable.
  • I think I'm not exceptional to use more than 5 account with opening and closing them.
  • What this feature should do?
  • When I close an account it disappears from the list of accounts and it even didn't show up in select boxes in forms or anywhere else.
  • But... all the transactions made on this accounts wouldn't be deleted so it didn't affect any statistics.
  • Also transfer transactions will still be clear to read for user what happened on the account (the second one in transfer).

  • preset dates
    Now...
  • When I edit or create a new transaction there is a input field for a date. When you click it a calendar pops out and four options under the calendar. (Today - Tomorrow - next week - next month) This is all fine but...
  • How I'm using skrooge (I hope I'm not alone):
  • Open it and insert a transactions usualy from the past (transactions I already did in a real world). So Im really missing a fast preset options for Day before yesterday - Yesterday (I'm sure i've never used an option of next week or next month)
  • summary:
  • change the preset date options to (yesterday - today - tomorrow) or one day extra on both sides (day before yesterday - yesterday - today - tomoroow - day after tomorrow)

Thanks a lot for any answers (from developers) and dont be afraid to add more feature request (at least the developers would know, what we are missing and what to add)

Hi have you already tried:

Close: Accounts/tick close box on desired accounts

Preset Dates: instead of click dropdown, type tomorrow or yesterday or monday (for next monday) I'm sure you understand.
Maybe monday- could be useful for last monday, I dont know?
For those that may not understand; click in the date entry and type above, or click on the right dropdown for calendar pop-up. Its in the helpfile.

A useful unrelated tip: Skrooge lets you undo to many levels. However, nothing beats a backup. I use Dropbox and put my skrooge.skg file there allowing restore back to any date in past.

Alistair.
PS keep using Skrooge; its neat eh?

Close: Accounts/tick close box on desired accounts
no i didn't (I disable this column in the begining).
It just disappear (as i wanted to) in an account list and in the account list only (which is far from enought).
Desired behavior is exactly oposite. In accounts list mark an account as closed and keep it visible (could be ropened later) and hide it in every other place it is shown.

Still it would be nice to have this option in contextual window (right click on account -> Close)

The second thing with the date is nice, but it got lot of drawbacks and user "unfriendliness"
  1. I'm using a translated version, it uses a marks above letters in a day names (which I as a programmer don't use)
  2. When I'm using GUI, my behavior is mostly concentrated on mouse (pointing and clicking) thus two clicks by the mouse are (click on a "v" symbol on a select box - choose day) much much faster and easier to use than mouse click on a desired form field (select box for date) and then type a day (either date or day name), especially in my case, where doing this, means extra change keyboard layout there and back
  3. I didn't mention that after clicking on a date field, you usualy move your hand from mouse to keyboard, this action rapidly decreases smoothness of usage.

[/list]

Close: almost exactly what you are saying does apply: use the [Home] button to show a summary of the closed accounts and the Left side dashboard to show only desired accounts not closed.

Dates: this area may be improved further I dont know (the programmers check the forum out regularly), but as for me, I find the interface very good; you can use keyboard or mouse or both.

Hi,

In Skrooge, we use the standard date selector of KDE, so the list of predefined value is set by KDE, we cannot modify it.

For me, the faster way to enter a date is to use "partial date".
Examples:
If the current date is 21/09/2011.
If you enter 20 then Skrooge will understand 20/09/2011
If you enter 22 then Skrooge will understand 22/08/2011
If you enter 17/08 then Skrooge will understand 17/08/2011
If you enter 17/10 then Skrooge will understand 17/10/2010

In fact, skrooge selects the most appropriate date in the past (on in the future in "Schedule" page).

I hope this will help you.

Thanks a lot to both. All the info put together gives me fair usability I was looking for.
Still, I'm looking forward to be able to close an account by contextual menu and to see closed accound just in 'bank and accounts' tab.
To see closed account in dashboard is IMHO wrong. I noticed italic font, but to see ten or more closed account (wich got 0 balance) isn't useful.
Is it possible to make an settings/options menu for account window in dashboard to be able to show or hide closed accounts?

This is not yet possible.

This is possible by using the "Show" menu button on top left of the "Bank and account" table. You just have to save the state of the page to have this new state each time you open the page.

Italic account means that you closed an account having money. This is strange. Are you sure that this is not an error ?

This is not needed. See above anwsers.

Dashboard isn't showing actual information:
I started to use dashboard for quick info about how my finance. It is a powerful tool and I like it more and more. I've also got some complains about logic of usage. Lot of "widgets" in a dashboars shows you an actual data (accounts, banks, advices, incomes and expenses, interests, reports), but then there is a group of tools, which shows a data from last month (5 main variations, 5 main expense categories, budget).
First how useful is to view this info from last month, especially budget. You usually want to know how are you doing this month or today, if you can spend more or save in some categories. How you did last month interests you just once in the begining of a new month.
And finally, not everybody wants this period to be a regular month.
Is it possible to first, made every "widget" on dashboard to be actual (data about actual period)
and second, define own perion.

I understand the point. This is logical.
I will do it.

Back to Dashboard: everything works fine, just tiny pieces here and there are breaking the overall perfect image.
One of them is variations widget. Thanks again for actual month option, but I've noticed there is now a coloring of variation. This color is always green, negative or positive mark are hidden in words (not highlighted). It is satisfiing but not really well arranged. What I noticed that it only shows variations in expenses, which is great. Problem is in visualisation.
When we know all the variations are expenses, we can count difference to last period (month). This difference (variation) is either positive for our pocket (we spent less than last time) or negative (we spent more). This could be easilly shown by red/green coloring. Users can afterwards pay more attention to red signs or be satisfied by success of saving money.
I'm aware of "Advices" widget, which do similar job, but it is related to budget. Thus not so similar value of information.

Just one comment: You should be able to change the month by using the contextual menu (right click) on the widget.
